Bring your tripod – apparently the moon will be at lunar perigee: “The full moon could appear up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter in the sky, especially when it rises on the eastern horizon at sunset or is provided with the right atmospheric conditions.”

The runaway winner in the latest poll was Toronto Necropolis & Riverdale Farm, so we’re off the see animals and headstones! Incidentally, this was the very first “official” TOPW walk, back in November 2009 [details].

Date: Saturday 5th March 2011.
Meet: 10:00am at the entrance to the farm at 201 Winchester Street [map]
Route: Wander around the farm, and then wander around the Necropolis. (I like these simple walks!)
Note: the farm is going to be muddy, so be prepared!
About 5pm we’ll heard down Sumach, River, Shuter then Sumach again to reach Queen St.
Lunch: At the farm – they have a small kitchen.
Post-walk: The Dominion on Queen (To be confirmed)
Hashtag: please use “TOPW:NR”

TOPW

Hyla suggested we check out an exhibition that’s on for the next couple of weeks, and Derek agreed to postpone his walk, so that’s what we’re doing!

Date: Saturday 19th February 2011.
Meet: 10:00am at Dundas West and Roncesvalles – there’s a Starbucks on the south side of the intersection, looks like an old bank [streetview]
Route: Set off SE on Dundas, over the railway lines, then S on Lansdowne. Almost immediately take Shirley Street and follow it to Brock Ave. Turn S on Brock, cut through the McCormick playground, over to Middleton St. From there we’ll zigzag over to Dufferin, along Alma Ave, and down Gladstone Ave to Queen St. [map]
Lunch: The Gladstone at noon. (Confirmed; we’re in the Melody Bar.)
Afternoon: Short walk E on Queen St to the Stephen Bulger Gallery to see The Toronto Show.
Once we’re ready to move on we’ll have to review the rest of the route; I’ve sketched out a 2 – 2.5 hour walk but we can adjust this based on the time (and weather) (and thirst).
The provisional route is: E on Queen St, past CAMH, turning S on Shaw St. Just after King St we’ll go E on Douro St. Head south on Strachan Ave all the way to the Princes’ Gate then follow Manitoba Drive west, cut through the GO station and emerge on Atlantic Ave. Walk north to Liberty St, east to Hanna Ave to the pub.
Post-walk: The Brazen Head from 5pm onwards. (Confirmed.)

TOPW

First “real” walk of 2011 (because the “Hair of the Dog” was more bar crawl than photo walk!):

Date: Saturday January 22nd
Meet: Davisville Station at 10:30am
Route: We will head east at first meandering back and forth to Mount Pleasant and back to Yonge St. before wandering to the Red Lantern pub for a brunch menu. Afterwards we will wander a bit up the Kay Gardiner Belt Line travel before striking north and back to Yonge where eventually we will end up at The Duke of Kent for a post walk warm up and brews. Reservations have been made and confirmed.
Hashtag: Please use “TOPW:DV” for all photos taken on this walk.

And for all those that are curious here’s the map of the route: View Davisville Photowalk in a larger map.

I recently renamed my photoblog – it’s now PaulHenmanPhotography.com – and I’ve created a related Facebook group.

I’ll continue doing my monthly round up of my photos here but that site/group will be for a select few shots.

Hopefully everyone who owns a computer (laptop or PC, Windows, Linux or Mac) is already backing up properly but if you’re not, now is the time to start!

A lot of people talk about a 3-2-1 strategy and that’s what I do too: 3 copies of each critical file using 2 media and 1 off-site. But what does that mean? Firstly, decide which files are critical – for me that’s my photographs and some other documents, as well as emails and files I use on my websites. I tend to have a guide: if I can recover/recreate the file from another source (e.g. original CDs for software and music, or download the info from someone’s website) then I don’t usually bother backing it up, but if in doubt I’ll include it.

I haven’t shot much since November’s round-up – I’ve even been out with my camera and yet I’ve still only taken a few photos. Mind you, I did start another Flickr group – it’s a weekly themed challenge called “Word of the Week” … and treated myself to a new Canon 7D body! It’s first real outing will the the TOPW Hair of the Dog walk on Saturday :)

Don’t forget to check out what Flickr calls my “most interesting” photos and my other albums, as well as my monthly round up posts.

If you’ve only got time to look at one or two photos, check out my “best of” photoblog @ PaulHenmanPhotography.com – I only post one picture per week (sometimes less!), so I try to pick a recent shot that I really like.

And if you’re interested in exploring Toronto with your camera, check out TorontoPhotoWalks.ca (we’re on Flickr and Facebook too!).

1st-Jan-2011 08:28 am - MMX in review – Happy New Year!
celebrate

At the start of the year I posted “MMX” in which I listed some goals for this year and, thanks to Lisa Bettany’s post, broke down some more details.

The good news is that I can check off most of my goals: I been a Scrum Master on a couple of projects and coaching Scrum teams throughout the year, and I think my photography has improved. I’ve certainly made progress with using Lightroom (now using LR3 on my Mac) and shot RAW only (apart from when I was at the Toronto Indy). The only thing I haven’t really done is show any of my work, but I’m hoping we can arrange an exhibition soon with some other members of the Toronto Photo Walks group.

So what about 2011? I think it’s more of the same, improving my skills and helping others do the same … and trying to catch up (and stay on top of) all my email!

In addition to the Toronto Photo Walks group, which is just over a year old, I’ve just started a new group – Word of the Week. The aim is to take & post a new photo each week; I’ll post a new word each Sunday and everyone has until the following Saturday night to post a photo which represents what that word to them. Easy as that.

The first Word of the Week is “orange”, which means people should tag their photos with “WW:orange“. Meanwhile I’ll continue reading the manual and practicing with my new 7D :)
