ASUS Eee or Everex Cloudbook?
8th-Mar-2008 11:02 am
Ever since I saw someone's Eee at DemoCamp a couple of weeks ago, I've been trying to resist buying one! Once I started looking online I discovered there's also the somewhat similar Everex Cloudbook, as well as the Elonex ONE (only available in the UK?) and the HTC Shift, but the Eee seems to be the front-runner in the UMPC marketplace at present. (There's rumour of an HP UMPC which they (HP) say people will just buy without thinking about the cost(!) but it's not released as yet.)

Anyway, back to the Eee - I think it's a stupid name but I like what it can do. My justification to Kerri is "it's cute" and she's almost convinced :)

If you want to see what the Eee and Cloudbook look like, there's a brief video and a head-to-head video (wow, the Cloudbook's slow to start!), with more of a review in this video and in great techie detail on NotebookReview.com. (Their conclusion says "In the end, the Eee PC is the single most impressive notebook we've seen priced below $400"!) In head-to-head comparisons, it's generally pretty close but the Eee tends to get the nod.

So I'm still trying to resist the urge to go and buy one right now, but just in case I thought I'd look for suppliers downtown :) ... if only so I can play with one before taking the plunge.

Of the four models currently available, I'm (obviously) looking at the {comparatively} high-end one, the 8Gb model ... at least until I check the prices!
  • I should start with the guy from BigBoxLinux that I met at DemoCamp; they have only got the 2Gb ($334) and 4Gb ($444) listed
  • Canada Computers only appear to have the 2Gb model ($300), but you can pick from 5 colours :)
No, hold on - that's just their promo - they've got the 4Gb ($357) and 8Gb ($530) listed too ... and in stock!
  • NCIX have the 2Gb ($300) & 4Gb ($400) in stock but say the 8Gb ($500) is 1-2weeks special order [not local, I know, but they often have better prices]
  • TigerDirect don't list it
  • I saw a post from someone who just bought theirs at Filtech: 8Gb ($500) - they're on Spadina, south of College
  • The Source has the 8Gb ($500, except it's sold out) or a web-only deal of the 8Gb with 4Gb SDHC card ($530)
  • Premier Computer Canada only has the 4Gb in stock
  • Infonec doesn't list the 8Gb model
  • posted question to toronto group in response to someone asking (a few weeks ago) where to buy an 8Gb Eee...
Update: Bought an 8Gb Eee :)

Nope, Canada Computers has them up to 8gb

I think the Asus is the way to go over the other ones ... I don't think the Cloudbook is out yet (?) but been announced. The HP has been announced. Plus there's already a bit of an aftermarket / hacking market for the Asus already.

I've been thinking of one as well :)

Also note there's a NEW eeePC just announced with a 9" screen (check on Engadget for pics)

I corrected myself in the post - I saw the promo (2Gb only) and then found the 4 & 8Gb via search.

Do you think they'll give us a discount if we buy two together? :)

Doubt it :)

Not going to wait for the larger screen model (with potentially a faster CPU)?

I am interested in it for the mod capabilities. I would have to put GPS and more RAM in it. Looks like fun.

I got an N810 for slightly cheaper, but I am not that impressed with it (sucks for video playback unfortunately and the GPS receiver is iffy).

But part of the reason I like the Eee is its size - if I want a bigger screen, I've got my laptops ... or desktops. Maybe my wife is right - maybe we have enough tech toys? Naaaaah! :)

I just read that it's the same physical size - they've moved the speakers to accommodate the bigger screen. Now I'm torn!

Apparently it's coming out in April. I'm not sure I can wait any longer ... but a bigger screen ... it'll be more expensive ... faster / more memory ... the new ones are more Windows-focused ... want one NOW ... aargh! Decisions, decisions :)

plus they'll be using SSD's instead of Flash Mem :)

So it makes sense to wait ... but I want one NOW!

...Not that it matters that I want one now - no-one has one in stock :(
I called CanadaComputers and they said no (they have one but it's held for a customer); Filtech don't have one and said they don't have an ETA as they've on back order everywhere, "even Asia"; The Source still has it listed on their website but all the local stores say out of stock. :(

Hang on - the 8Gb one that I'm lusting after is SSD.

Yeah, they're all SSD.
