Shopping spree?

job_hunt
A friend tells me I should "kickstart your job hunt by making a sacrifice to the economic karma gods" by buying something frivolous. (It worked for her when she was looking for a new job.)

Hmmm, well, I'm usually pretty sensible but maybe I can be convinced on this ... especially if my frivolous purchase is a 2Tb hard drive or a new lens :)

What do you think? Should I blow $500-600 on a new shiny toy? Which one? (The friend who suggested this said the file server doesn't count because it's "useful" and therefore not frivolous!)

new car? :D

(or being serious ... how about a Canon L lens?)

I'm hoping my next job will be downtown, so I won't need a car. (Although we'll stay with ZipCars because it's handy once in a while.)

Kerri says I should go for a lens, and I'm thinking about something at the 20mm end of the range - the Sigma 18-200mm is great for most of what I do except for "across the table" party type photos :)

I have the sigma 10-20mm and it's quite nice. I only wish it was faster (ie: 2.8)

Search my flickr for the 1020mm tag for pics taken with it

Nice.

I just had a look at prices:
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM = $380.00
Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM = $1,499.00

Ouch!

(I know that's not the same lens you're using, but just amazed at the price difference for the "L")

unfair comparison .. in that case it's not so much the L vs nonL

it's the 1.4 vs 1.2. Price goes up sharply for faster speeds.

(and now seeing your comment below, what about a nice manfrotto tripod? I got a manfrotto + head pkg last year)

Really? A $1000 increase for f/0.2? OK, I know it's a inverse ratio, but a grand for a half stop difference? Wow!

but 0.2 @ 1.4 is a lot different than 0.2 @3.5 let's say :) the glass has to be bigger, maybe more elements, and it has to be perfect but I'll stop babbling about that now :)

I almost got a tripod when we were in England last week - my dad said he had one he's not using and was going to give it to me but couldn't find it.

I'll take a look at their website - I've not looked at any particular model (or even manufacturer), but I'd like something that folds up quite small so it's portable.

fine folds up, and it's portable .. but it's not small. it's about 2.5 feet long when folded up.

(Manfrotto 190)

A lens would be good.
What toys have you been eying for awhile?
24th-Aug-2008 02:17 pm (UTC)
Other than a Lamborghini? :)

A lens, tripod, flash, more lenses...!

That or the two-terabyte hard drive, which I'll need soon as I fill my 1Tb with photos :)

Or maybe the Marillion weekend, Montreal, except that's not until next year.

New lens for sure

It's looking like a lens will be the chosen sacrifice :)

D'oh! How about steering wheel and pedals for the XBox? Now that's frivolous! :)

Or more RAM for the PC? (More RAM @ CanadaComputers and BestBuy)

4Gb dorkstick @ $10!

Card reader? (~$20)
USB 2.0 PCI card? (??)

Better KVM?

Bought the steering wheel (and a card reader) at FutureShop yesterday :)

Looks like the PC's RAM is discontinued :(
