Italian Grand Prix - Qualifying
13th-Sep-2008 07:59 am
f1
My notes are going to be a little abbreviated for qualifying as my PC is dead so I'm doing my notes on my 7" Eee.

Monza is wet again, wetter than it was for yesterday's practice sessions, although the forecast for a dry race.

My notes are behind a cut as usual...

Qualifying session 1 (Q1):
Everyone's using the extreme wet tyres, throwing up lots of spray
NH spins but recovers
FA slides through the chicane as the Renault refuses to turn in
On-board with KR shows the poor visibility as he follows SB
TG 1:39.665
LH 1:39.259
TG 1:37.406
NP takes the escape road as he fails to make a corner
TG 1:37.056 - he's definitely got the hang of this wet circuit
Slowest is KR!
HK 1:36.405
All 20 cars are on track, which should help clear some of the rain and hopefully create a dry line
(SV P2)
HK 1:35.830
(LH P2)
10mins gone of Q1; 10mins left
Both Ferraris are still in the danger zone but there's plenty of time left in this session
HK 1:35.770
JB fails to get the Honda around the chicane again
(NR P2)
5mins left; bottom 5 are JB, AS, MW, NP, GF
Aargh! my notes for the last 5mins were eaten! They're gone! :(
Bottom 5 are: P16=RB, 17=NP, 18=KN, 19=JB, 20=AS

Qualifying session 2 (Q2):
HK 1:35.843
The rain is coming down harder!
Why are McLaren holding LH in the pits?
SV 1:35.837
KR off track but keeps it out of the wall
LH on his first flying lap and he's a long way off the pace
Pit-car for RK says more rain coming shortly
LH is P15 = slowest, but FM=P12 and KR=P14, so it could be an interesting grid if the track doesn't dry out
FM P10 but LH can't improve on P15
5mins left; bottom 5 are RK, GF, DC, KR, LH
LH spins at Ascari; recovers
The problem for KR and LH is that most cars are in the pits, so there's fewer on track clearing a line, which (with the continuing rain) means the track's getting worse, so no-one will improve their time, which means there's no benefit to anyone coming out of the pits!
Chequered flag is out
RK spins and almost stalls
There's no way anyone will improve on their final lap
Bottom 5 are: P11=RK, 12=GF, 13=DC, 14=KR, 15=LH
FM was very lucky to get P10, which means he's got a chance at pole

Qualifying session 3 (Q3):
Battling for the top 10 grid spots are SV, HK, NR, JT, SB, MW, FA, TG, NH, FM
Everyone is keen to get on track ASAP
SB 1:28.910
HK 1:38.694
Order after the first flying lap: HK, SB, MW, FA, FM, JT, NH, SV, NR, TG
FM to P4
HK 1:37.8?
SV 1:37.555
NR P3
MW P3
The rain continues to come down pretty hard
2mins left
SB aquaplanes and does a full spin and a half
Chequered flag falls; it doesn't look like anyone will be able to improve
No, FM moves up to P6
Order is: P1=SV, 2=HK, 3=MW, 4=SB, 5=NR, 6=FM, 7=JT, 8=FA, 9=TG, 10=NH
That's the first pole ever for Toro Rosso

Provisional grid: SV, HK, MW, SB, NR, FM, JT, FA, TG, NH; RK, GF, DC, KR, LH; RB, NP, KN, JB, AS.

So, a really interesting grid for tomorrow's race - if it's dry (as forecast) then expect to see KR and LH storm through from midfield.
