Converting Mac graphics
1st-Nov-2008 11:13 am
mac
A friend created an image (on his Mac) and sent it to me in .EPS format; I need to publish it on a website, which means I want it in JPG or PNG format. How do I convert it? (Note: freeware good; I don't like to pay for software!)

[On my Windows XP machine I have Paintshop Pro (v6.02!) and that's about it for graphics tools; my Mac (Power Mac G4 "Quicksilver") only has OS X Panther (10.3) - no extra apps; the Linux install isn't stable - I'm testing Fedora 10 Beta.]

Update: another friend has converted the file for me.

Hm, I'm using Paintshop Pro 9 and it can read and save pictures as various Mac formats including EPS. PSP9 is by now pretty cheap on ebay, so maybe you want to upgrade one day?

It may be worth a try to look for free updates on their site. Sometimes they offer conversion updates for free?

Good luck.

I tried PSP6.02 and it looked like it might open the EPS file but then just gave me an error. :(

I hadn't thought to look for an update. I just checked the PSP update page and it says there are no software updates.

If I'm going to spend $$ I wonder if I should just move to Photoshop (insert sheep noises!) ... ... hang on ... I forgot about Gimpshop for Windows (as well as Mac and Linux) and it's free! :)

GIMP maybe? Photoshop? Ask him to resave the image in JPG/GIF/PNG and resend ?

I've downloaded Gimpshop and it doesn't handle EPS - I thought it would :(

I've been thinking about buying Photoshop but I don't mess with my photos very much so unless there's a free version...?

Yeah, first thing I did was ask him to save them as JPG/PNG and re-send them ... still waiting :)

try IfranView ( http://www.irfanview.com/ )

with the Postscript Plugin ( POSTSCRIPT - (version 4.20): allows IrfanView to read EPS/PS/PDF files (using AFPL Ghostscript) )

edit* if it's not a big file, I can do it for you ... I'm using a mac, and I think the preview program will open it

I'd not used Irfanview in ages so I downloaded it recently, but when I tried to open the EPS I got a plugin error ... but didn't look into the cause. Do I need to download it separately?

"with the postscript plugin"

;)

Oh look - it works now!

Thanks

Another friend has converted it for me, but thanks for the offer.

It's now just one of those "I ought to be able to do it" frustrations that I want to beat ... especially as the friend who initially sent me the EPS images always forgets to convert them :)

I can open the EPS file in Preview but when I try to Save As there's no option to convert the format. It's probably because I'm running a Stone Age version of OS X :)
